Folk Dance
Approximately 2,500 years ago, pictures of dancers were engraved on the Dong Son drums. These engravings reveal two dance styles, one with accessories and one without accessories. The main dance accessory was a hat ornamented with a bird feather; it appears that the ancient Vietnamese treasured hats.
Throughout history, not only did the Viet (Kinh) have their own dance styles, but also did many other ethnic groups. Several examples of these dance styles include trong bong, quat, su tu, and bai bong.
Royal Dance
Royal dance appeared in Viet Nam during the Nguyen Dynasty. It originated to serve royalty, and it was performed at different types of ceremonies, such as weddings. The Vietnamese royal dance has its own characteristics and national colour. Some typical dances include the royal ritual, royal wedding, and animal ritual. The most interesting is the bat dap dance in which there are 64 dancers. Bat dap was the main dance of the royal ritual held every three years and conducted by the king. Another interesting royal dance is the Lan dance in which a couple of unicorns play and take care of each other that illustrates love in an incomparable way.
Ritual Dance
Ritual dance is closely connected to the ceremonies, beliefs, and customs of the Vietnamese ethnic minority groups. The dances often worship spirits and genies, facilitate prayer, or pay homage to the deceased. Because these dances display spiritual features, they were categorised as ritual dances.
Religious Dance
Religious dance may sound similar to the above- mentioned category of ritual dance; however, there is a difference. Religious dance is more linked to religions such as Buddhism and Brahmanism. Religious dances are not numerous in number, but they occupy enough cultural significance to form a own unique category of dance
